Part Five

Several weeks went by before Samuel finally emerged from the infirmary. Now mind you, I've had several weeks to stew on this entire situation, boy. I was always a good child and I continued to be a model citizen well into adulthood, even as I sit here now. When Samuel emerged, he limped to the bunk house and went inside. His bandages were off, but I could not see his face as I watched him from my room. I'd see him soon enough.

Later that night, I again crept out to the bunk house, not knowing if I was being watched, (though I was not, but at the time I really did not care). Samuel was initially reluctant to meet me by the willow tree, as I had Sarah inform him to do so. I checked him over as he stood in front of me. He will have scars, I thought, but at least he is alive. He admitted he did not want to meet me that night; not because of what happened, but because he worried for my own well-being concerning my father. That's when the plan was discussed. This plan is the whole reason I am writing you this letter, dear.

You see, during those several weeks of Samuel's recovery, I was so full of fury that I hatched up a plan for Samuel and myself to get away safely and to be able to be together as we wanted, without fear of consequences. Now you may think your grandmother possibly went off the deep end a tad when you hear about this plan, but trust me, it was for the best. Without it, your mother would never have existed, and neither would you!

I informed Samuel of this plan of mine and to my surprise, he was more than willing to help. I assumed he would try talking me out of it, but he did not. We discussed it heavily that night, down to every detail. This would work, it had to; we had no choice. That night when I returned to my room, I prepared for the first part of the plan. I gathered my old shoes that I typically wear when I am gardening and an older outfit that mother would not mind if it got dirty, I was simply going to go fishing at the Rocky River about Five miles down the road from the house. I could not wear my good clothing for that, now could I? Adam, Samuel and Rebecca were assigned to go into town to fulfill an order for my father in the morning. I guess I'd just pass some time doing something peaceful.

Morning comes around and I wake up bright and early, hearing the birds sing their enchanting songs, I adore Summer time, for that reason. Since it is a Saturday, we don't have studies today, so I have more time to ready myself and relax a little. Putting on my fishing clothes, which were my everyday boots, work dress and a white bonnet to protect my face from the sun.
